Online, confidence monetizes. Influencers who convey absolute certainty grow faster than those who model doubt. The creator economy rewards performative expertise—the person who can reduce complex conflicts to a viral explainer. In ideological and religious movements, participants compete to show devotion or orthodoxy. The easiest signal is rhetorical certainty. Over time, that arms race yields excommunication of nuance, performative maximalism, and leaders whose metacognitive brakes are burned out.

  1. Public health controversies: People skim papers or watch hours of content and conclude they can “do their own research” better than epidemiologists.   5. Conspiracy ecosystems: Conspiracy theories offer totalizing explanations—a perfect environment for Dunning–Kruger. It looks like communities that score themselves, leaders who revise aloud, platforms that slow unearned virality, and institutions that test before scaling. It looks like citizens who enjoy being less wrong next month more than being louder tonight.

Until then, the confidence trap will keep snapping shut—in our timelines, our pulpits, our town halls—while we congratulate ourselves on how sure we are. The way out is not to believe less, but to measure more; not to mute conviction, but to calibrate it; not to drown in the ocean of content, but to learn to sail—with charts, with instruments, and with the humility to check the stars.
